“Sydney mum spends around $10,000 a year on her kids’ sports”
A mother in Sydney’s south is currently forking out over $10,000 a year on sports activities for her kids.
All her kids take part in dance, Oz tag, football, netball, gymnastics, run club, swimming and rugby league. This means that she’s taking at least one of her kids to a sporting activity every day of the week.
With so much of the family budget being spent on sport, sometimes there’s the need to cut back in other areas. “Some weeks our dinners are on the budget side,” she says.
Although cost hasn’t put the family off sport, it is an important factor for lots of other families. In fact, according to new research commissioned by ING Direct, cost is the main consideration for almost a third of Aussie parents when helping their kids select a junior sport.
Although there is lots of evidence to show that sport is a worthy investment, only 37 per cent of parents think that they get good value from the sports their children participate in.
Likewise, almost 40 per cent of those surveyed said that they thought kids’ sport seemed to be getting more expensive every year. But despite the huge time commitment and astronomical bill, most parents say that it is worth it.
“It’s worth it to see them being active, learning the importance of good wellbeing and not being in front of a TV or iPad every afternoon,” she says.
